LONDON — The organizers of the English League Cup announced on Monday that referees will provide live updates in stadiums regarding the outcomes of video assistant referee (VAR) reviews during the upcoming semifinals of the tournament.

This marks a significant first for English soccer, as the technology will be implemented during the matches. Arsenal is set to go up against Newcastle, while Tottenham will face Liverpool next month in these crucial semifinal encounters, which will take place over two legs.

In an effort to enhance transparency within the sport, referees will make announcements to both the live audience in the stadium and to viewers watching from home after conducting VAR reviews. These reviews will include situations where decisions are checked at the pitchside monitor, as well as instances of potential handballs by goal scorers and offside calls.

The English Football League (EFL) indicated that this trial is part of a broader initiative to bolster transparency and effectively utilize advancements in technology to benefit match officials and fans alike.

Though live announcements at matches have not been a practice in English soccer, a similar system was tested during the Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand last year.
