BERLIN — Union Berlin has made the decision to reinstate fan-favorite Steffen Baumgart as the team’s head coach following the dismissal of Bo Svensson, which was prompted by the team’s disappointing start to the Bundesliga season.
The club located in Köpenick announced on Monday that Baumgart, who previously enjoyed a successful spell as a forward, netting 22 goals over his two seasons with Union, will lead his first training session on Thursday. A friendly match against Bundesliga competitor Holstein Kiel is scheduled for the upcoming Sunday.
At 52 years old, Baumgart embarks on his fourth coaching role, having previously managed teams such as Paderborn, Cologne, and the second-division club Hamburger SV. His most recent stint ended in November when he was let go due to concerns about the team’s chances of promotion.
Union’s sporting director, Horst Heldt, expressed confidence about the selection of Baumgart, stating, “We decided for Steffen Baumgart because we’re convinced that he’s the right type of coach for us.” He emphasized Baumgart’s leadership style, ability to develop and challenge players as key factors that influenced their choice. Additionally, Baumgart has extensive experience in the Bundesliga and is well familiar with Union’s culture.
Heldt has a personal connection with Baumgart, having hired him as as coach during his tenure at Cologne, demonstrating their prior working relationship. The return of Baumgart is likely to resonate positively with fans, as he was named Union’s player of the year in both seasons he played there after joining the club in 2002.
Svensson’s dismissal came on Friday after the team failed to secure a win in nine consecutive matches across all competitions. Looking ahead, Union’s next match is at Heidenheim after the winter break on January 11, followed by a home game against Augsburg. Both teams currently sit below Union, who occupies the 12th position in the league standings.
