The Miami Marlins have completed a trade with the Chicago Cubs, acquiring first baseman Matt Mervis along with cash considerations in exchange for infielder Vidal Bruján, as announced on Sunday.
Matt Mervis, who is 26 years old, was previously ranked as the No. 15 prospect in the Cubs’ system for the 2024 season according to MLB Pipeline. During his time with the Triple-A Iowa squad, Mervis recorded a batting average of .235, along with 15 doubles, 15 home runs, and 43 RBIs. His brief tenure with the Cubs last season saw him struggle at the plate, hitting just .115 in nine games and managing one double and three RBIs during that period.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Mervis made his major league debut on May 5, 2023, against the Marlins. Throughout that initial stint in the majors, he appeared in 27 games and posted a batting average of .167.
Vidal Bruján, who had a noteworthy season with the Marlins, was designated for assignment on December 20 after he played a career-high 102 games in the previous season. Bruján held a batting average of .222, stealing five bases along the way. He achieved personal bests in several categories including runs scored (32), hits (55), doubles (14), and triples (2), and matched his career-high with 16 RBIs while also walking a total of two times.
