COLUMBIA, S.C. — In an impressive display on Sunday, the second-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks extended their home winning streak to 65 games by overpowering Wofford with a score of 93-47. Freshman Joyce Edwards stood out, contributing significantly with 16 points during the matchup.
Despite missing injured reserves Maddy McDaniel and Sakima Walker, South Carolina (12-1) demonstrated resilience and took control of the game with an impressive 17-0 run in the second quarter against the Southern Conference’s Terriers. Edwards, who stands at 6-foot-3, has been the leading scorer for the team in their last three outings.
Along with Edwards, Tessa Johnson scored 14 points, while Raven Johnson added 13 points. The Gamecocks remain unbeaten at home since December 2020 and are the defending national champions. They had not played since December 19 due to a six-day break for the holiday season, which included McDaniel recovering from a concussion and Walker appearing on crutches during warmups. Despite being limited to a roster of 11 players, South Carolina managed to dominate the Terriers (6-5).
Key takeaways from the game include Wofford’s Rachael Rose, who managed to net 20 points even with a challenging performance that had her shooting only five successful field goals. She connected on 3-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc and was 5-of-18 overall. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks are still seeking a consistent offensive flow, even as they excelled defensively, converting 16 Wofford turnovers into 26 points.
A pivotal moment came when Sania Feagin converted a layup in the second quarter, bringing the score to 21-14 in favor of South Carolina after Wofford had narrowed the gap to five points. The Gamecocks then responded with a streak of 15 points in a row, effectively sealing the game before halftime.
In terms of rebounding, despite Chloe Kitts, Ashlyn Watkins, and Feagin not having standout shooting performances, they collectively grabbed 22 rebounds, showcasing their defensive prowess.
Looking ahead, Wofford will host Erskine on Thursday, while South Carolina is set to begin their Southeastern Conference play at Missouri on the same night.
