PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University has announced the hiring of Jimmy Rogers as its new head football coach, effective Saturday. This decision comes after the departure of previous coach Jake Dickert, who accepted the head coaching position at Wake Forest on December 18.
In a statement regarding Rogers’ appointment, Washington State athletic director Anne McCoy expressed confidence in his abilities, saying, “Throughout the process, it was clear that Jimmy possesses the essential qualities to guide our program, including character, passion, vision, and commitment.” McCoy emphasized Rogers’ impressive coaching skills and his strong work ethic, noting the importance he places on developing the young athletes in his team.
Rogers joins the Cougars after achieving significant success at South Dakota State, where he led the team for two notable seasons. Under his leadership, the Jackrabbits not only secured the 2023 FCS national championship but also made an impressive run to the national semifinals this season, concluding with a remarkable 27-3 overall record.
His accolades include receiving the Eddie Robinson Award, which recognizes him as the top coach in the FCS following the championship victory in 2023. Prior to becoming head coach, Rogers served as the defensive coordinator during the Jackrabbits’ national title win the year before. His tenure at South Dakota State spans over 12 years, beginning as a linebackers coach in 2013.
Rogers has a rich history with the program, having played as a linebacker for three years at South Dakota State, where he set the school record for career tackles. After his playing career, he began coaching at his alma mater and also spent two seasons at Florida Atlantic before returning to South Dakota State.
Now, Rogers faces the challenge of revamping a Washington State program that has experienced significant attrition due to the transfer portal. The Cougars have seen the departure of at least 25 players along with many coaches, including both offensive and defensive coordinators.
Washington State recently concluded its season with a 52-35 defeat against No. 22 Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl, illustrating the hurdles Rogers will need to overcome as he reestablishes the team’s competitive edge.
