COLLEGE STATION, Texas — In a commanding performance, Wade Taylor IV tallied 15 points alongside a career-best 10 assists, while Zhuric Phelps contributed 12 points and secured 10 rebounds in the No. 13 Texas A&M’s decisive 92-54 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday.
With his 15 points, Taylor has now surpassed Vernon Smith’s previous record of 1,778 points, placing him second on Texas A&M’s all-time scoring chart. He currently stands at 1,779 career points, needing 212 more to eclipse Bernard King’s record of 1,990 points, set between 1999 and 2003, to become the all-time leading scorer for Texas A&M.
Taylor made his return to the court following a brief absence due to a game missed on December 20 against Houston Christian. The Aggies (11-2) kicked off the match with a 7-0 scoring streak and maintained control throughout. Texas A&M went into halftime with a 48-29 lead and wrapped up the game with a staggering 12-0 run in the final 5:24 of play.
Quion Williams was the standout player for Abilene Christian (8-6), leading his team with 14 points. This match proved to be a stark contrast to their previous encounter when the Wildcats narrowly lost to the Aggies 81-80 in November 2021, as they were unable to mount any significant challenge this time around.
In a critical moment, Texas A&M capitalized on a powerful 14-0 scoring spree in the first half, ballooning their lead to 18 points. Guard CJ Wilcher played a pivotal role during this run, nailing three consecutive 3-pointers, which included back-to-back shots from the right wing during fast transitions. Following this surge, Abilene Christian never managed to drop the deficit into single digits again.
The Aggies demonstrated remarkable depth with their impressive bench scoring, totaling 45 points from reserves. Wilcher led the second unit with a season-high 14 points, while forward Andersson Garcia added 12. A total of 12 players participated in the game, and every single one found the scoreboard.
Looking ahead, Texas A&M will commence Southeastern Conference play against their rivals, Texas, on January 4. Meanwhile, Abilene Christian will wrap up their nonconference slate at home against Stephen F. Austin on December 31.
