TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have welcomed back linebacker Shaquil Barrett, a two-time Pro Bowl player and two-time Super Bowl champion. The team announced his signing on Saturday, alongside the activation of safety Jordan Whitehead from injured reserve ahead of their upcoming home game against the Carolina Panthers.
Barrett had a productive five-year tenure with the Buccaneers from 2019 to 2023. He made an impressive debut season, leading the NFL with an exceptional franchise-record of 19.5 sacks. The following year, he played a crucial role in securing the franchise’s second Super Bowl victory.
Throughout his time in Tampa, Barrett started in 70 games and recorded a total of 45 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. However, he was released last winter as part of a salary cap adjustment. Following his release, he inked a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins but shocked fans by announcing his retirement via social media before the training camp period began in July.
After taking some time off, Barrett opted to return to the league last month. He completed the waiver process earlier this week and subsequently rejoined the Buccaneers.
Meanwhile, safety Jordan Whitehead is set to return after missing the last four games due to a pectoral injury. His return comes after the Buccaneers placed fellow safety Christian Izien on injured reserve due to a similar injury.
In addition to these roster moves, the Buccaneers activated rookie wide receiver Kameron Johnson from injured reserve and elevated punter Jack Browning from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday. This activity reflects the team’s commitment to optimizing their lineup as the season progresses.
