Travelers heading to or from the United Kingdom encountered significant disruptions on Saturday, as dense fog and limited visibility hampered air traffic during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
Gatwick Airport in London communicated that passengers might experience flight delays throughout the day and expressed apologies for the inconveniences caused. On Friday, adverse weather conditions had already resulted in flight delays of up to three hours, with at least 40 flights, primarily short-hauls to European destinations, experiencing delays on Saturday morning.
Heathrow Airport, recognized as one of Europe’s busiest, advised travelers to consult their airlines regarding any possible delays. Other airports in the U.K., including Stansted and Manchester, similarly reported disruptions to their services.
According to the Met Office, the official weather forecasting service in the U.K., some areas could see visibility drop to as low as 100 meters (328 feet) due to thick fog patches. They recommended that travelers set aside additional time for their journeys and urged drivers to exercise heightened caution on the roads.
Among those affected were Kiera Quayle and her husband, who were visiting family on the Isle of Man for Christmas. Their return flight to London was significantly delayed and ultimately canceled late Friday.
“It’s frustrating and stressful, but I heard several families lamenting their missing holidays and work, which makes it even worse for them,” Quayle remarked.
Fortunately, weather conditions are predicted to improve on Sunday, as indicated by the Met Office.
The main air traffic control authority noted that the restrictions would persist in areas experiencing low visibility. “Such restrictions are only implemented to ensure safety,” they stated. “Our teams are collaborating closely with airports and airlines to alleviate disruptions as much as possible.”
These restrictions were particularly challenging given the timing, as many individuals are traveling to return home after the Christmas break and prepare for New Year festivities.
