Kyle McCord of Syracuse sets new ACC season passing yards record, surpassing Deshaun Watson

SAN DIEGO — Kyle McCord set a new Atlantic Coast Conference record for most passing yards in a season, surpassing Deshaun Watson’s previous record during a thrilling 52-35 Holiday Bowl win over Washington State. McCord achieved this milestone with a remarkable 50-yard pass to Darrell Gill Jr. on Syracuse’s opening play of the second half.

Entering the game, McCord, who is the national leader in passing yards, had already accumulated 4,326 yards—placing him fifth on the ACC’s all-time list for a single season. To break Watson’s 4,593-yard record, established in 15 games with Clemson in 2016, McCord needed to throw for 268 yards. He managed to surpass that mark by just one yard with his impressive play to Gill, who executed a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch.

In a standout performance, McCord completed the game with 453 passing yards and five touchdown throws, helping the Orange finish their season with a 10-3 record under first-year head coach Fran Brown. With this performance, McCord elevated the ACC single-season record to an impressive 4,779 yards.

Reflecting on his achievement, McCord expressed his disbelief: “Just to be sitting here and have that record now is crazy to see how everything comes full circle.” McCord had previously transferred from Ohio State, bringing a wealth of talent to Syracuse.

Coach Fran Brown praised McCord’s selflessness and competitive spirit, noting how those qualities have driven the team’s success. Brown recounted the moment he recognized McCord’s toughness during early training sessions. During a grueling workout in a vintage weight room, despite being among the last to go, McCord continued to push through the pain while others stopped, earning immediate respect from his teammates.

Brown emphasized that McCord’s relentless attitude and determination have been evident throughout the season, reinforcing why he is such an integral part of the team’s success.
