ARCADIA, Calif. — Renowned baseball stars Alex Bregman and Walker Buehler have joined forces as co-owners of a three-year-old thoroughbred that secured its first victory at Santa Anita on Friday.
The horse, named March of Time, triumphed against four competitors, winning by a margin of 2 1/4 lengths in a six-furlong race that offered a $60,000 purse, specifically aimed at horses seeking their initial win. The size of the purse reflects the caliber of the contenders participating in the event.
Under the training of the illustrious Bob Baffert—who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame—March of Time was the favorite, returning $4.60 for bettors. The colt took control of the race in the latter part of the stretch and overcame Santarena, who finished as the runner-up, with a furlong remaining.
March of Time is sired by Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown champion who was also trained by Baffert. In addition to Bregman and Buehler, Bob Baffert’s wife, Jill, is a co-owner of the horse. Buehler, who is currently a free agent after playing a critical role in leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to the World Series title this year, has maintained a long-standing friendship with the Bafferts.
Bregman, also a free agent, has spent the last nine seasons playing as a third baseman for the Houston Astros and was part of the team during its two World Series victories. Previously, March of Time was in the ownership of prominent figures Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith from Coolmore Racing. The colt had a second-place finish in his initial racing appearance a year before this victory.
This event marks an exciting chapter for Bregman and Buehler, blending their sports achievements with new ventures in the world of horse racing.
