A tragic shooting took place in Plymouth, California, where a man lost his life during an interaction with a California Highway Patrol officer, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred in this small city located east of Sacramento. While it’s unclear if the officer was the one who discharged their firearm, officials confirmed that it was an officer-involved shooting.
Lieutenant Commander Matt Massod, from the Amador California Highway Patrol, expressed concern during a press briefing, stating, “We recognize that this is a tragic incident that impacts our community,” and requested patience from the public as the investigation unfolds.
The highway patrol reported that the events began Thursday evening when the officer was dispatched to a call regarding a vehicle obstructing a roadway in Amador County. Upon arrival, the officer activated his emergency lights and observed a man pushing a pickup truck into the roadway, as explained by Massod.
According to reports, the man attempted to steer the truck toward both the officer and opposing traffic. The officer remained in his patrol vehicle and repeatedly commanded the individual to cease moving the truck, but the man ignored these instructions.
In an effort to prevent the truck from posing a danger to oncoming vehicles, the officer strategically maneuvered his patrol car to block the vehicle’s path. However, the pickup truck ultimately struck the officer’s vehicle.
Once the officer exited his patrol car to confront the man, gunfire erupted, resulting in the man’s death. Authorities noted that the deceased was armed, but fortunately, the officer was unharmed.
The identities of both the officer and the deceased individual have not been released to the public. The California Highway Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, working under the supervision of the Amador County District Attorney’s office.
