BIRMINGHAM, England — Aston Villa has announced that their appeal to overturn Jhon Duran’s red card from the match against Newcastle United has not been successful.

The 21-year-old Colombian player received a red card just 32 minutes into the Premier League game at St. James’ Park, where Villa lost 3-0. The incident occurred when Duran seemingly stamped on defender Fabian Schar, which triggered an intense reaction from Aston Villa’s manager, Unai Emery. He suggested the club would contest the decision following the match.

However, in an update shared on Friday evening, Aston Villa confirmed that their appeal was rejected, resulting in Duran facing a three-match suspension due to violent conduct. The official statement on the team’s social media account clarified, “Aston Villa can confirm that our decision to appeal Jhon Duran’s red card in our match with Newcastle United has been rejected. The player will now miss our next three matches.”

As a consequence, Duran will be sidelined for upcoming Premier League fixtures against Brighton and Leicester City, as well as an FA Cup third-round encounter against West Ham on January 10.
