EDINBURGH, Scotland — An individual was taken into custody following allegations of racial abuse directed at a player during a Scottish Premiership clash between traditional Edinburgh rivals, Hearts and Hibernian, held on Thursday evening.
The incident transpired during a video review concerning Hibernian’s opening goal, which was scored in the 10th minute of the match. The target of the alleged abuse from a fan in the Hearts section was Hibs’ substitute, Jordan Obita.
In a formal statement, Hibernian confirmed that a supporter had been removed from the venue and apprehended due to the reported incident of racist behavior. The club expressed gratitude towards Hearts for their prompt response in addressing the situation at Tynecastle Park.
In a show of solidarity, Hearts released a statement denouncing racism and any form of abusive conduct. The club made it clear that such behavior has no place within the sport or its community.
Hibernian’s manager, David Gray, commended Obita for maintaining his composure despite the alleged incident as he came on as a substitute in the 85th minute. Gray emphasized the need for unity against such occurrences.
“There is no place for this behavior, and it has been appropriately addressed,” Gray stated during an interview with a British broadcaster. “Ultimately, what matters is that Jordan was able to perform excellently upon his arrival on the pitch. We must work to ensure that these issues have as little impact on individuals as possible. This behavior is entirely unacceptable.”
