The remains of a lost Hungarian hiker have been discovered in Slovenia

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia — On Thursday, rescuers in Slovenia recovered the body of a Hungarian hiker who had been missing since getting lost in a blizzard in the Alps the previous week.

According to a post on social media, the search team discovered the man’s body in a gorge, where they confirmed he showed no signs of life. Recovery efforts to transport the body were already in progress.

The rescuers made their way into the gorge using ropes after being deployed to the area by a Slovenian police helicopter, which initially transported them close to the incident site.

The rescue service reported, “We found the hiker 250 meters below the accident site, buried more than two meters under the snow.”

Two Hungarian hikers were reported missing after they encountered worsening weather conditions while trekking at an elevation of approximately 1,700 meters in the Alps, just north of Ljubljana.

Rescue efforts were hampered for several days due to high winds, which prevented helicopter flights in the affected area. On Monday, the female companion of the lost hiker was successfully located and brought to safety, but the team had to retreat without finding the man, who had sustained a broken leg.

The snowstorm impacted a large region of the Balkans, leading to power outages for tens of thousands of residents and disrupting transportation in Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia.

Slovenia is well-regarded for its mountaineering and hiking opportunities in the Alps. Authorities consistently advise visitors to ensure proper preparation and to check the weather conditions before venturing into mountainous areas.
