NAHARIYA, Israel — Early Wednesday morning, a missile launched from Yemen caused air raid sirens to sound across central Israel, leading millions of citizens to seek shelter for the second consecutive night.
The military confirmed that the missile was successfully intercepted before it could enter Israeli territory; however, police stated that debris from the interception landed in various towns, with no injuries reported.
This incident marks the fourth occurrence within a week where missile activity from Yemen’s Houthi rebels triggered alarms in Israel. On Saturday, an errant missile injured 16 people after it struck a playground in Tel Aviv, attributed to a failure of the Israeli air defense system to intercept it.
Just days earlier, Israeli aircraft targeted Yemen’s capital—controlled by Houthi forces—and a port city, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals. These retaliatory strikes were carried out by Israel in response to earlier Houthi assaults.
In a notable diplomatic move, Israel’s foreign minister called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday to denounce the Houthi attacks and to address concerns regarding the Iranian support that allegedly bolsters the rebel group’s military capabilities.
