The Boston Red Sox have taken another step in their pitching staff overhaul by trading for left-handed pitcher Jovani Morán from the Minnesota Twins. This move, which occurred on Tuesday, saw the Red Sox send catcher and infielder Mickey Gasper to Minnesota in return.
Jovani Morán, who is 27 years old, played as a reliever for the Twins in 79 games over the past three seasons, from 2021 through 2023. During this time, he accumulated a 4.15 earned run average (ERA), recorded 112 strikeouts, and allowed 52 walks. He also managed to limit opposing hitters to a .208 batting average. However, it should be noted that he was sidelined for the entirety of the previous season due to recovery from Tommy John surgery. Morán was initially drafted by the Twins in the seventh round of the 2015 MLB Draft.
On the other hand, Mickey Gasper, a 29-year-old switch-hitter, made a brief entrance into the major leagues last year, appearing in 13 games for Boston. He was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2018 draft but was later picked up by the Red Sox during the minor league phase of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
As both teams stand, they have a full complement of 39 players on their 40-man rosters, leaving little room for further adjustments as the offseason progresses.
