INDIANAPOLIS — An incident at the Castleton Square Mall on Monday evening resulted in one person being shot and prompted authorities to clear the venue of holiday shoppers. Police report that an 18-year-old suspect allegedly discharged a firearm within the mall premises.
Shortly after the shooting, law enforcement apprehended the suspect on a serious charge of intimidation using a deadly weapon. As of Tuesday morning, formal charges had yet to be filed against him according to the court records available online.
Authorities responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the northeast section of the city, coinciding with a busy shopping period just two days before Christmas. Officers swiftly evacuated the mall’s patrons to ensure their safety. Officer Tommy Thompson emphasized the danger posed to families and the added stress of such an incident occurring near the holiday season.
Initially, police stated that no injuries were reported; however, a man later sought medical attention at a hospital with injuries that were consistent with being shot. Fortunately, he was listed in stable condition.
Investigators believe that the gunfire resulted from a confrontation between individuals at one of the mall’s entrances. The scene was notably marked by a bullet hole found in a wall and another in an arcade machine near the location of the incident.
This is not the first time Castleton Square Mall has been the site of violence. Earlier in 2023, a shooting on the mall’s exterior claimed the life of a teenager and injured another individual, with police later making an arrest in connection to that case.
