Sophie Hediger, a competitor in Switzerland’s snowboard cross team during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, tragically lost her life due to an avalanche at a mountain resort, as confirmed by the country’s skiing federation on Tuesday.
The avalanche occurred at the Arosa resort in Switzerland on Monday.
Hediger, who was 26 years old, participated in the women’s snowboard cross event as well as the mixed team event at the Beijing Games.
In the current season, she celebrated her first two podium finishes in the World Cup circuit, with her most notable achievement being a second-place finish in St. Moritz in January.
Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser expressed deep shock at the news, extending heartfelt condolences to Hediger’s family in a statement. He reflected on the tragic nature of her passing, emphasizing that it was “brutally and far too soon.”
