INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts selected Anthony Richardson to be their franchise quarterback, and during their recent game, they showcased his potential in that role.
On Sunday, Richardson connected on only 11 passes while leading the Colts to a 38-30 win against the struggling Tennessee Titans. He became the third player since 2000 to score 38 points with fewer than 15 passing attempts. Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor executed their strategy effectively, combining for 38 carries, racking up 308 yards, and scoring four touchdowns.
“My responsibility is to pass the ball and make throws, so when opportunities arise, I’m expected to make completions,” Richardson commented. “I’m simply focused on doing my job to the best of my abilities.”
Although his statistics haven’t shown significant improvement since reclaiming his starting role, Richardson has demonstrated notable development. He started and completed all five games, marking the longest duration of his career. He successfully led late-game comebacks against both the New York Jets and New England and broke the franchise record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a season, scoring his sixth TD from five yards out during the matchup.
When it came to a critical third-down situation to secure the win, Richardson stepped up by delivering a 10-yard completion to Michael Pittman Jr. However, he wasn’t without faults, as a late throw led to another interception that cost the team a scoring opportunity early in the game.
Richardson completed 7 of 11 passes for 131 yards and threw a 27-yard touchdown to Josh Downs just before halftime, which extended their lead to 24-7.
As Richardson and Taylor continue to complement each other’s skills, there’s optimism that the Colts are just beginning to unlock the full potential of their partnership as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
“Adding the running element that (Richardson) brings was invaluable,” said coach Shane Steichen. “He had some impressive rushing plays throughout the game, and having both him and J.T. together is significant for us.”
What’s working
The running game has been a focal point. The Colts’ offense has had its ups and downs throughout the season, but on this occasion, it was remarkably effective. The team surpassed a 68-year-old record by rushing for 335 yards. Taylor has recorded 76 carries for 421 yards over the past three games and is back over 1,000 yards this season, marking his first such season since winning the rushing title in 2021.
What needs assistance
The ability to finish games remains a concern. The Colts went from leading 38-7 to needing a last-play interception to seal the game. This may help explain why the team has participated in 12 games decided by a single possession this season. Finding a solution could help them avoid missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.
Stock up
Center Ryan Kelly. Some speculated that Kelly, a three-time Pro Bowl player, may have played his final game in Indianapolis when he went on injured reserve in October. In his absence, rookie Tanor Bortolini stepped up effectively. However, Kelly has shown his importance by significantly impacting the running game since his return.
Stock down
Right guard Dalton Tucker. The undrafted rookie stepped into a starting role due to a season-ending injury to Will Fries. However, after the Colts brought veteran Mark Glowinski back and inserted him in Tucker’s position, Tucker became a healthy scratch for the recent game.
Injuries
Wide receiver Alec Pierce (concussion) and linebacker E.J. Speed (knee) were sidelined in Week 16, leaving their status for next week uncertain. Defensive backs Jaylon Jones (throat injury) and Tre Flowers (shoulder) also exited and did not return. Additionally, the Colts may have avoided a serious setback when Pro Bowl left guard Quenton Nelson, who injured his ankle in the fourth quarter, returned after a brief absence to finish the last drive.
Key number
18. According to sources, the Colts have an 18% chance of reaching the playoffs with two games left in the season.
Next steps
The Colts’ schedule remains manageable, with an upcoming matchup against the New York Giants (2-13) next week, followed by a rematch with the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-12) to close the season. If they can replicate their strong performance from Sunday’s first three quarters, they stand a good chance of finishing with a winning record and potentially making the playoffs. However, if they continue to play like they did in the fourth quarter, outcomes could shift dramatically.
