Southern California has climbed to the fourth position in the women’s college basketball standings following a narrow victory over UConn. The Trojans ascended three places in the rankings after overcoming the then-No. 4 Huskies with a score of 72-70. This matchup was particularly significant as it was a rematch of last season’s Elite Eight contest, which UConn had won.
“It feels amazing to secure the win, especially knowing the history from last year when they eliminated us,” remarked USC standout JuJu Watkins after the game. This victory marked the first time the Trojans overcame UConn in their history.
“This win is particularly meaningful, not only because of the implications but also due to UConn’s renowned program and the impact Geno Auriemma has had on our sport,” stated USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. “Their legacy might not include a title in the past couple of years, but they maintain a standard of preparation and performance that enhances our growth.”
The top three teams in the poll remained unchanged, with UCLA, South Carolina, and Notre Dame maintaining their positions. The Bruins secured 30 out of 32 first-place votes cast by a national media panel, while the Gamecocks and the Fighting Irish each received one. Following their loss, UConn dropped to seventh, trailing Texas and LSU.
Completing the top ten were Maryland, Oklahoma, and Ohio State.
Duke fell five places to rank No. 14 after a defeat to South Florida. This loss adds to the Blue Devils’ current season record that includes earlier defeats by Maryland and South Carolina. The Bulls, who now hold a 7-6 record, have faced a tough schedule that included games against several ranked teams, such as UConn, Louisville, TCU, and South Carolina.
On the other hand, Alabama made a return to the rankings, landing at No. 20 after a noteworthy 82-67 victory over Michigan State, which handed the Spartans their first defeat this season. This win was also Alabama’s initial victory over a ranked team for the year.
In terms of conference representation, the Southeastern Conference boasts eight teams in the rankings with Alabama’s comeback. The Big Ten follows with seven teams, while the Atlantic Coast Conference features six teams. Additionally, the Big 12 has three teams in the poll, and the Big East has one.
Looking ahead to the week, the matchup of the week features No. 23 Michigan visiting No. 4 USC on Sunday. This game will mark the Wolverines’ entry into Big Ten competition, as they head to Los Angeles to face the Trojans before taking on the Bruins shortly thereafter. Coach Kim Barnes Arico’s team has started the season strong with a 10-2 record.
