MADISON, Wis. — In a commanding performance, Nolan Winter recorded a double-double, contributing 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as the Wisconsin Badgers defeated Detroit Mercy 76-53, completing their nonconference slate on Sunday.
The Badgers, boasting a record of 10-3, will take a break for the holidays before returning to action in the Big Ten Conference when they host Iowa on January 3.
The game shifted in Wisconsin’s favor when Steven Crowl scored at the five-minute mark of the first half, putting the Badgers ahead 8-6, a lead they maintained for the rest of the contest. Winter then sparked a 33-20 run to close the first half with a 3-pointer, giving Wisconsin a comfortable 39-26 advantage at the break.
Four minutes into the second half, Winter extended the lead to 20 points with a tip-in off an offensive rebound. Zavier Amos further widened the gap with a jumper that stretched the lead to 30 points with under four minutes left on the clock.
Along with Winter’s noteworthy performance, Crowl tallied 15 points and John Blackwell contributed 12. The Badgers’ bench added an impressive 22 points, and they out-rebounded their opponents 50-34 overall.
Leading the way for Detroit Mercy (5-9) were Grant Gondrezick II and Orlando Lovejoy, each scoring 20 points, though the remainder of the team combined for only 13 points. Gondrezick and Lovejoy managed to shoot 17 of 38 from the field, with Gondrezick hitting 3 of 4 from behind the arc, while their teammates struggled, going just 5-for-27 from three-point territory.
