ST. LOUIS — In a thrilling matchup during the annual Braggin’ Rights game, Illinois emerged victorious against Missouri with a final score of 80-77 on Sunday. Kasparas Jakucionis played a pivotal role for Illinois, contributing 21 points, including the crucial basket that put his team ahead with just 28 seconds left on the clock.

Throughout the game, Illinois maintained its lead for almost 30 minutes; however, Missouri made a notable comeback toward the end. The Tigers went on an impressive 11-0 run, and Trent Pierce’s layup gave them a 68-67 advantage with approximately four minutes remaining.

In response, Jakucionis connected on a crucial 3-pointer, reclaiming the lead for Illinois at 75-72 with two minutes left. But Missouri’s Tamar Bates quickly countered with a well-placed 3-pointer during a transition play, tying the game at 75 with only 1:14 remaining.

As the clock wound down, both teams exchanged free throws. Jakucionis, a standout freshman with six consecutive games scoring over 20 points, made a decisive play by driving along the right side of the court, halting, pivoting, and sinking a turnaround jumper to put Illinois ahead 79-77 with mere seconds left.

Following a miss from Missouri, Kylan Boswell stepped to the line, converting one of his two attempts to extend Illinois’ lead to three points. Meanwhile, Jacob Crews had a chance for Missouri to tie the game but missed a pivotal 3-pointer.

Illinois excelled at the free-throw line, with Boswell hitting 11 out of 12 attempts and Jakucionis going perfect at 8 for 8. Overall, Illinois shot an impressive 22 of 23 from the stripe, in contrast to Missouri’s 28 free throws from 76% accuracy. The game witnessed a total of 43 fouls called.

Boswell’s performance added to the team’s success as he recorded 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Additionally, Tre White contributed 13 points, while Tomislav Ivisic recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For Missouri, Mark Mitchell and Tony Perkins each tallied 18 points, with Bates scoring 17, marking the end of their 10-game winning streak. Looking ahead, Illinois will host Chicago State on December 29, while Missouri prepares to face Alabama State on December 30.
