BEIJING — The Chinese government has voiced its strong disapproval of the recent announcements from the United States regarding military assistance and sales to Taiwan, stating that the U.S. is “playing with fire.”
President Joe Biden authorized a package that includes up to $571 million in Defense Department materials, training, and military services for Taiwan on Saturday. Additionally, the U.S. Defense Department announced on Friday that it had approved $295 million in military sales to the island.
A statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry called on the U.S. to cease its military support to Taiwan, labeling such actions as “dangerous moves” that threaten to undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan, a democratically governed island home to about 23 million residents, is regarded by China as a part of its territory. The Chinese government insists that Taiwan should be brought under its control. The military assistance provided by the U.S. aims to bolster Taiwan’s defensive capabilities and act as a deterrent against potential Chinese aggression.
The recent $571 million allocation in military aid follows Biden’s previous authorization of $567 million for similar purposes announced in late September. Among the details of the military sales are approximately 300 tactical radio systems priced at $265 million and 16 gun mounts valued at $30 million.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude for the approval of the two military aid packages, asserting in a post on social media platform X that it underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense.
