Wembanyama nets 30 points, ties personal best with 10 blocks as Spurs defeat Trail Blazers 114-94

SAN ANTONIO — In an impressive display of talent, Victor Wembanyama put on a show by scoring 30 points and matching his career-high with 10 blocks, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a commanding 114-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday evening.

Wembanyama also contributed seven rebounds, despite the fact that he did not take the court for the last 8.5 minutes of the game, as the Spurs cruised towards their largest win margin of the season.

Making history, Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to record four 3-pointers alongside 10 blocks in a single game. Additionally, he is the first player under 21 years of age to achieve multiple games with double-digit blocks since the NBA began tracking these statistics in 1974.

In support of Wembanyama, Charles Bassey added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Devin Vassell chipped in 11 points. This victory marks the fourth consecutive win for the Spurs over the Trail Blazers.

Currently holding a record of 15-13, the Spurs have won two games in a row and four out of their last five contests. Notably, they did not secure their 15th win last season until March 17.

On the other side, Shaedon Sharpe emerged as the leading scorer for Portland with 25 points, while Anfernee Simons contributed 18 points. Despite snapping a six-game losing streak with a narrow 126-124 victory over the Denver Nuggets earlier this week, the Trail Blazers have struggled overall, losing nine of their last eleven outings.

Looking at significant statistics for the Trail Blazers, they struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 12 of 43 attempts on 3-pointers; Simons himself managed only 3 successful shots out of 11 from long range.

Wembanyama has been a standout performer, averaging 29 points over his last five games. A pivotal moment in the contest came when he blocked Deni Avdija’s layup attempt in the final quarter, marking his 10th block of the night and equaling his earlier career mark set against Toronto back in February.

In a remarkable display of consistency, Wembanyama has recorded a block in 62 consecutive games, breaking the previous Spurs’ franchise record of 61 held by Hall of Famer David Robinson. He also became the 15th fastest player in league history to reach 200 career 3-pointers, achieving this milestone in just 94 games.

As for their next challenges, the Trail Blazers are set to face off against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, while the Spurs will take on the Philadelphia 76ers the same evening.
