EL PASO, Texas — In a decisive matchup during the consolation final of the Don Haskins Basketball Invitational, the Akron Zips emerged victorious, defeating the Jackson State Tigers with a score of 68-50 on Saturday evening.
Shammah Scott contributed significantly off the bench for Akron, scoring 12 points and securing six rebounds. Isaiah Gray showcased his versatility by notching a double-double, finishing with 11 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Additionally, Sharron Young also made an impact by contributing 11 points to the team’s total.
For Jackson State, who remain winless with a record of 0-12, Keiveon Hunt was the standout player, scoring 11 points while also dishing out four assists and making three steals. Romelle Mansel added nine points along with six rebounds, while Delyle Williams recorded eight points and four steals in an effort to rally the team.
The game turned in favor of the Zips just two minutes before halftime, as they took a narrow lead that they would not give up. The halftime score stood at 30-29, with James Okonkwo contributing eight points for Akron. In the second half, Akron pulled away decisively with a 14-2 scoring run, increasing their once 14-point lead to a commanding 26 points over Jackson State.
