His wife, Pamela Henderson, along with their daughters, reflected on his character, stating, “Rickey was a legend both on and off the field. He cherished his roles as a son, dad, grandfather, brother, and friend, always displaying humility. Integrity guided his life, and his passion for baseball was profound. Though he may have left this world, he now rests peacefully with the Lord, holding onto the incredible memories and monumental awards he achieved during his lifetime.”
Tony Clark, the executive director of MLBPA, shared his sentiments, saying, “Players from all walks of the game feel the weight of this loss. He was both a teammate and a friend, leaving an impact that spanned generations. His remarkable speed and signature neon green batting gloves served as inspiration to countless players. Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized Henderson’s legendary status, noting, “For countless baseball fans spanning generations, Rickey Henderson represented the pinnacle of base stealing and leadoff hitting, earning him widespread admiration and respect throughout the sports community.”
Former Athletics general manager Sandy Alderson reminisced about Rickey’s colorful career: “I dealt Rickey Henderson away twice but kept bringing him back every time. He was the greatest player I’ve ever witnessed; he excelled in every aspect of the game with a flair that thrilled his fans and irritated his foes. Despite the perceptions of his cocky persona, he was a genuinely kind individual who loved children. His true nature unfolded through the years, and despite his time with nine different teams, he remains unforgettable.”
Dave Stewart, a former teammate, expressed his grief, stating, “It’s hard to articulate the depth of my emotions over the loss of someone who’s been a constant in my life. While Rickey was recognized as the best baseball player, he was also a true brother to me.”
Hall of Famer Dave Winfield lauded Henderson, stating, “He was undoubtedly one of the best players I had the privilege to play alongside, and there’s no argument that he was the greatest leadoff hitter of all time.”
