ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Cornelia Huetter from Austria stunned the Swiss audience by finishing ahead of local favorite Lara Gut-Behrami to clinch victory in a World Cup super-G event on Saturday.

This race was notable not just for Huetter’s impressive performance but also for the return of American skier Lindsey Vonn, who participated after almost six years in retirement, finishing in 14th place.

Huetter’s triumph marked her second win in as many weekends; she previously secured a downhill victory in Beaver Creek, Colorado, just a week earlier. Throughout the race, Huetter was trailing behind the Olympic champion Gut-Behrami at every checkpoint but managed to gain crucial time in the lower section of the challenging Corvaglia course, ultimately finishing with a time 0.18 seconds faster than her Swiss rival.

With this win, Huetter became the first Austrian to triumph in a super-G in St. Moritz since Michaela Dorfmeister in 2006.

Reflecting on her experience during the race, Huetter commented, “After inspecting the course, I thought things might be a bit simpler. However, once I actually began skiing, I realized it was quite challenging, much tougher than I anticipated. The gates approached rapidly, and it was rather tricky. I felt that I performed exceptionally well in the final segment.”

Italian skier Sofia Goggia claimed third place, finishing 0.33 seconds behind Huetter, marking her third consecutive podium finish since recovering from an injury. Vonn crossed the finish line 1.18 seconds behind the leader.

This victory represents Huetter’s eighth World Cup title, with five of those wins coming in the super-G category. Last season, she also claimed the season-long World Cup downhill championship.

The competition continues, with another super-G race set to take place in St. Moritz on Sunday.
