KYIV, Ukraine — On Saturday morning, Ukraine launched drone strikes deep into Russian territory, specifically targeting residential areas in the city of Kazan, located in the Tatarstan region and over 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from the current front lines. Local officials reported that a total of eight drones were deployed in the attack, with six striking residential structures, one affecting an industrial site, and another reportedly being intercepted over a nearby river.
A video shared via the local Telegram news channel Astra, which has been confirmed, depicts a drone making impact with the upper floors of a high-rise building. In the aftermath, authorities confirmed there were no reported injuries or fatalities. However, as a precaution, operations at Kazan’s airport were suspended, and all public events were canceled for Saturday and Sunday.
These strikes form part of a broader offensive that follows a significant attack on Friday, where a Ukrainian missile assault on a town within Russia’s Kursk border region resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including a child. While Ukraine has refrained from openly claiming responsibility for the drone activity, it aligns with a pattern of escalating conflict between the two nations.
In a retaliatory move, Russian forces launched 113 drones targeting Ukraine overnight into Saturday. Ukrainian officials indicated that they successfully shot down 57 of these drones, while an additional 56 were reportedly lost, likely due to electronic countermeasures employed by Ukrainian defenses.
Additionally, Ukrainian officials have noted that several drone attacks caused injuries within the conflict-affected areas. In the Kharkiv region, Governor Oleh Syniehubov announced that eight individuals sustained injuries during drone strikes that occurred on Friday night in the city, which shares the same name. Separately, in Zaporizhzhia, four people were injured when debris from a downed drone struck a nine-story residential building, according to regional Governor Ivan Fedorov.
Meanwhile, Russian military forces appear to be making incremental progress in eastern Ukraine, with the country’s Defense Ministry declaring the capture of the village of Kostiantynopolske in the Donetsk province. This position is strategically located only six miles away from the besieged city of Kurakhove, which Russian troops are working to encircle.
