PROVO, Utah — Kanon Catchings led the way for BYU with an impressive 21 points as the team cruised past Florida A&M with a dominant score of 103-57 on Friday night.
Florida A&M initially took the lead with Jordan Chatman scoring near the basket and hitting a three-pointer. However, BYU quickly responded as Mawot Mag sank a three-pointer followed by a dunk from Catchings, leveling the score at 7-7. This moment marked the beginning of a staggering 22-0 run for the Cougars, allowing them to establish an early stronghold in the game. By halftime, BYU had surged ahead with a 29-point advantage and maintained control by outscoring the Rattlers by 17 points in the second half.
With a shooting performance that showcased their offensive prowess, BYU (9-2) connected on 15 of 34 attempts from three-point range and boasted a field goal percentage of 54%. Catchings stood out by hitting 8 of 12 shots, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Dallin Hall contributed significantly with 13 points, alongside seven assists, five rebounds, and a steal. Off the bench, Dawson Baker made his mark by nailing 3 of 5 three-point attempts to add up to 11 points and three assists. Both Mawot Mag and Tevin Knell chipped in with 10 points each, rounding out a well-distributed scoring effort.
On the other side, Florida A&M (3-7) struggled to keep pace. Sterling Young was the top scorer for the Rattlers, netting 14 points and going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Chatman and Shaqir O’Neal each contributed 10 points. However, Florida A&M’s shooting was less than satisfactory, managing only 18 of 55 attempts from the field, which equates to 32.7%, and 10 of 34 from the three-point range.
BYU has now claimed victory in seven consecutive home games to kick off the season and will be gearing up to welcome Arizona State for their Big 12 Conference opener on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, Florida A&M will head to Tarleton State on December 29 for their next matchup.
