Longtime Labour figure Peter Mandelson appointed as UK’s ambassador to the United States

LONDON — On Friday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the appointment of longtime Labour Party figure Peter Mandelson as the U.K.’s next ambassador to the United States, marking an unusual choice for someone not coming from a diplomatic background.

Mandelson, who held prominent positions under former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown from 1997 to 2010, is scheduled to commence his role in early 2024. Starmer praised Mandelson’s extensive experience, stating, “The United States is one of our most important allies, and as we venture into a new chapter in our relationship, Peter will bring unmatched expertise to the position, enhancing our partnership.”

As Mandelson prepares to succeed outgoing ambassador Karen Pierce, Starmer is optimistic that he will play a significant role in navigating the intricacies of U.S.-U.K. relations during President Donald Trump’s anticipated second term, beginning officially with the inauguration on January 20.

At 71 years old, Mandelson has been viewed as a leading candidate for this crucial role, often regarded as one of Britain’s key diplomatic assignments. He expressed enthusiasm about his new position, acknowledging the challenges and potential facing Britain and asserting, “It will be a privilege to collaborate with the government to seize those opportunities for both our economy and national security, all while strengthening our historic alliance with the United States.”

A notable political strategist, Mandelson was instrumental in Labour’s resurgence to power in 1997 after 18 years in the opposition. He served in several capacities during Blair’s administration before becoming the business secretary under Brown and taking on the role of European Commissioner for trade.

His extensive knowledge of trade is expected to be invaluable in addressing the policies of the Trump administration, which has indicated intentions to impose tariffs on a wide range of imports. It is uncommon for politicians to be chosen for the role of U.K. ambassadors, as these positions are typically held by seasoned diplomats.
