Daniil Savelev, a Russian tennis player, has been handed a two-year suspension following a doping violation, as announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) on Friday.
The ITIA disclosed that Savelev tested positive for meldonium, a banned substance, in July 2024. He has been under provisional suspension since August this year, meaning his official ban will last until August 2026.
At one point in his career, Savelev achieved a personal best doubles ranking of 1,486 in August 2022.
In their statement, the ITIA indicated that there was no evidence to suggest Savelev had intentionally sought to enhance his performance through doping. The agency noted that he claimed to have unknowingly consumed meldonium tablets, mistaking them for family medication that bore a similar appearance to legitimate supplements.
Additionally, the ITIA remarked that Savelev accepted the suspension because he did not take any measures to lessen the impact of this violation of the rules.
