Teenager fatally stabs 7-year-old and injures a teacher along with three students at Croatian school

ZAGREB, Croatia — A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning in Zagreb when a teenager armed with a knife entered Precko Elementary School and fatally stabbed a 7-year-old girl, leaving three other children and their teacher injured, as reported by local authorities.

The assault occurred around 9:50 a.m., coinciding with the last day of classes before the Christmas break at the school, which serves students aged 7 to 15. According to Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic, the assailant, a 19-year-old former student of the institution, resides in the vicinity.

During the chaotic scene, it was revealed that the perpetrator had begun to harm himself, prompting police intervention to prevent his suicide. Bozinovic shared that the attacker had a history of mental health issues, including a prior suicide attempt, casting doubt on his mental stability during the incident.

While violent incidents in educational settings are uncommon in Croatia and the surrounding Balkan region, there are notable precedents. Earlier this year, in May 2023, a shooter opened fire at a school in Belgrade, Serbia, resulting in the deaths of nine students and a security guard.

Media outlets in Croatia captured footage of the chilling aftermath, showing students fleeing the building and a medical helicopter arriving on-site for emergency assistance.

In response to the tragedy, Croatian authorities have declared Saturday a day of mourning, resulting in the suspension of various Christmas celebrations. Political candidates campaigning for the presidential election have also paused their activities as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.

President Zoran Milanovic expressed his condolences, stating that the immense sorrow over this incomprehensible tragedy cannot be adequately articulated. He urged for collective efforts to ensure that schools remain safe havens for all children.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic conveyed his disbelief at the attack during a governmental meeting, emphasizing that efforts are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
