European football leagues dismiss recent plan for new separate tournament

MANCHESTER, England — On Thursday, the organization representing European soccer leagues decisively turned down the most recent proposals for a separate super league.

The Madrid-based A22 Sports Management unveiled plans for a new competition intended to rival the Champions League, which has been termed the Unify League.

However, there remains uncertainty regarding the level of support for this initiative, as A22 mentioned having discussions with various clubs, leagues, and “other parties” involved.

The European Leagues, which encompasses 39 leagues and associations across Europe, issued a statement clearly rejecting any notion that they were consulted about these plans.

They reasserted their commitment to the existing framework governing how clubs qualify for UEFA tournaments such as the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.

According to the European Leagues, the competition model proposed by A22 lacks necessity and evidence, potentially exacerbating an already busy international match calendar.

They emphasized that supporters and stakeholders have repeatedly indicated that any expansion of international club competitions, which detract from domestic tournament schedules, would not be accepted.

Previous efforts to form a Super League in 2021 that would shield 15 top clubs from relegation fell apart amid widespread backlash and protests from fans.

Last year, A22 introduced an updated format that included elements like promotion, relegation, and opportunities for teams to withdraw from the league, along with plans for a women’s tournament.

The current proposal aims to accommodate 96 clubs, with entry based on annual performance in their respective domestic leagues, as stated by A22.
