PARIS — Defender Wilfried Singo of Monaco has expressed remorse for a reckless incident that resulted in PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma sustaining several cuts and facial injuries during a recent match in the French league.
In the game, which ended with PSG triumphing 4-2 over Monaco on Wednesday, Donnarumma’s face was left bloodied after being struck by Singo’s cleat in the 17th minute.
While attempting to leap over the sliding Donnarumma after his shot had been blocked, Singo inadvertently caught the goalkeeper’s face with his boot.
“My action was certainly not meant to harm, but I later realized that he suffered a serious injury,” Singo stated on social media, conveying his message in both French and Italian. “Wishing you a swift recovery.”
Donnarumma lay on the field while treatment was administered but eventually managed to get up and leave the pitch, making way for Matvey Safonov.
Images captured during the match revealed Donnarumma had a cut below his right eye, and despite having previously received a warning, Singo narrowly avoided being issued a red card for the foul play.
Paris Saint-Germain later reported that Donnarumma experienced “facial trauma with multiple wounds,” and he was expected to undergo medical assessments the following day. It’s anticipated that he will need a break for several days to recuperate fully.
With this victory, PSG established a 10-point advantage at the summit of the French league standings, while Monaco remained in third place, sharing points with second-place Marseille, which has a match in hand.
