ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a thrilling matchup, Donovan Dent emerged as the standout player for the New Mexico Lobos, scoring an impressive 40 points in their 78-71 win over the VCU Rams on Wednesday evening.
Dent’s strong performance was supported by fellow teammates Nelly Junior Joseph and Mustapha Amzil. Joseph contributed significantly with 15 points, shooting 5 of 11 from the field, and also secured 11 rebounds. Amzil matched Joseph’s point total, finishing with 15 points as well, along with eight rebounds, while shooting 5 of 12 from the field and converting on 5 of 7 free-throw attempts.
The Rams, who fell to 9-3 with this loss, were led by Max Shulga, who scored 20 points and made two steals. Phillip Russell added 13 points to the scoreboard, and Joe Bamisile made his presence felt with 12 points and a pair of steals. This defeat marked an end to VCU’s five-game winning streak.
The Lobos took the upper hand midway through the first half, seizing the lead at 11:11 and maintaining it for the remainder of the game. At halftime, New Mexico led 37-30, with Dent leading the scoring efforts with 15 points by that point. He further powered the team in the second half, adding 25 points and sealing the victory with a final margin of seven points.
Looking ahead, New Mexico will face off against Colorado State this coming Saturday, playing on the road, while VCU prepares to host William & Mary on Sunday.
