WILMINGTON, N.C. — In a solid showing on Wednesday night, Donovan Newby secured 21 points to lead UNC Wilmington to a 79-66 victory over FGCU.
Newby demonstrated impressive shooting skills, completing 7 of 13 attempts from the field, which included 4 out of 9 from beyond the arc. He also converted 3 of 4 free throw attempts, contributing to the Seahawks’ record of 8 wins and 3 losses this season.
Additionally, Noah Ross contributed 12 points, finishing with a shooting line of 5 for 9, including 1 for 4 from three-point territory. Ross also added six rebounds and dished out five assists to help his team. Nolan Hodge added another 11 points, achieving a shooting percentage of 66.7%, and hit 2 out of 4 shots from three-point range, but struggled from the free-throw line with just 1 of 4 made.
For FGCU, Zavian McLean was the offensive leader, scoring 20 points throughout the game. Keeshawn Kellman also made an impact, posting 16 points along with nine rebounds.
The game started favorably for UNC Wilmington, as they captured the lead with 12:30 left in the first half and maintained it for the rest of the contest. They ended the first half ahead by a score of 37-27, with Newby contributing 10 points before the break. After halftime, the Seahawks extended their lead, outscoring FGCU by three points in the second half with Newby once again leading the team with 11 additional points.
Looking ahead, UNC Wilmington will face off against UNC Asheville on Saturday at their home ground, while FGCU will host Florida Tech on Sunday.
