The Colorado Buffaloes have successfully acquired former Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter through the transfer portal, potentially setting him up to take over for Shedeur Sanders next season.
Salter is expected to be in competition with highly-rated high school prospect Julian “JuJu” Lewis for the starting quarterback position. Lewis is anticipated to join the 20th-ranked Buffaloes (9-3) during the upcoming spring semester.
Notably a dual-threat quarterback, Salter wrapped up a regular season with the Flames where he showcased his versatility by rushing for 579 yards and scoring seven touchdowns, alongside throwing for 1,886 yards and 15 touchdowns. His average of 224.09 total yards per game positioned him among the top ranks in Conference USA.
In leading Liberty to an 8-3 finish this year, Salter’s former team is set to compete in the Bahamas Bowl on January 4 against Buffalo.
Colorado’s offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, commented on the importance of recruiting a player like Salter as Lewis continues to develop. He acknowledged Lewis as “a great decision maker,” highlighting his sense of timing and accuracy as a passer. Shurmur expressed confidence in Lewis’ potential by stating, “If he continues to elevate his play, he will secure a promising future.”
With Sanders preparing to conclude his Buffaloes career following the Alamo Bowl on December 28 against BYU, there is pressure to fill the quarterback position. Sanders has set numerous school records during his tenure, including a single-season passing yards record of 3,926 and 35 touchdown passes. He is noted for having thrown touchdown passes in 48 consecutive games, dating back to his time at Jackson State.
Additionally, former Washington State quarterback John Mateer has confirmed his transfer to Oklahoma. This decision follows Oklahoma’s recent hiring of former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle for the same role with the Sooners.
Mateer shared a photo of Oklahoma’s Memorial Stadium on social media with the enthusiastic caption “Praise God!! #BoomerSooner.” In his final season with the Cougars, he accomplished 3,139 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, while also rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Cougars finished the season with an 8-4 record and averaged 36.8 points per game.
Mateer is seen as a potential successor to Jackson Arnold, who has decided to transfer to Auburn. In another notable transfer portal movement, Tennessee has secured the commitment of former Arizona offensive lineman Wendell Moe Jr.
