WASHINGTON — The incoming Secretary of Defense nominee, Pete Hegseth, is set to undergo his initial public questioning by U.S. senators on January 14.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, informed reporters that the committee is preparing to conduct a hearing for Hegseth in mid-January. Hegseth, a former Fox News personality and military veteran, has been actively visiting various Senate offices to garner support from Republican senators. However, some committee members have expressed concerns regarding his suitability for the position due to allegations surrounding his drinking habits and claims of sexual misconduct.
In light of these accusations, Hegseth has assured senators that he will abstain from alcohol should he be confirmed as defense secretary. He has also disputed the allegations against him. President-elect Trump has publicly endorsed Hegseth’s nomination, declaring on his social media platform that “Pete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!” Hegseth recently joined Trump at the Army-Navy football game over the weekend, further solidifying their alliance.
Following the swearing-in of the new Republican Senate on January 3 and Trump’s inauguration on January 20, additional confirmation hearings are anticipated. Incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated a priority to expedite the confirmation of Trump’s cabinet members once his presidency commences.
