EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — After missing a game due to a heel injury, Drew Lock is anticipated to return as quarterback for the New York Giants in their upcoming match against the Falcons in Atlanta this Sunday.
Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Wednesday that Lock has fully recovered and will take charge as the Giants (2-12) seek to end their franchise-record-tying nine-game losing streak.
The Giants have experienced a tumultuous quarterback situation since they benched and subsequently released Daniel Jones following a bye week. Tommy DeVito initially stepped in as the starter against Tampa Bay on November 24, but he suffered a right forearm injury towards the end of that 30-7 defeat. Lock then took the field but lost to Dallas on Thanksgiving and faced another defeat against New Orleans, where he sustained injuries to his heel and elbow but managed to finish the game.
DeVito was back on the field this past weekend against Baltimore but unfortunately suffered a concussion towards the end of the first half, contributing to a 35-14 loss. Tim Boyle, who was signed recently, stepped in to finish the game for the Giants.
“We just try to do the best we can every time,” Daboll said, addressing the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position in recent weeks. “We prepare the players well. The three of them put in a lot of effort. They focus on the game plan, practice hard, and ensure they’re ready to play.”
While DeVito remains in the concussion protocol, Daboll expressed optimism that he might be ready to serve as a backup on Sunday against the Falcons (7-7), who are also making a major quarterback change by starting rookie Michael Penix Jr. in place of Kirk Cousins this week.
