NEW YORK — Who are the premier reggaeton artists globally? Names like Bad Bunny and Daddy Yankee likely come to mind, along with Wisin & Yandel, Rauw Alejandro, Farruko, and J Balvin. For many years, the narrative surrounding urbano music has prominently featured male artists. However, the landscape is shifting, especially in recent times.

Karol G’s album, “Mañana Será Bonito,” has made a significant mark, becoming Spotify’s fourth most-streamed album worldwide in 2024, despite its release the previous year. Additionally, a wave of fresh talent emerging from Puerto Rico, including Villano Antillano, RaiNao, and Young Miko, is highlighting a transformation within the genre—one that is starting to move away from its traditional associations with machismo.

Young Miko has garnered attention since the launch of her 2022 EP “Trap Kitty,” which led to her debut full-length album, “Att.” She stands out not only for her confident Latin trap style, aimed at uplifting the LGBTQ+ community, but also for her viral tracks like “RiRi” and “offline,” featuring Feid.

Recently, “Att” earned Young Miko a Grammy nomination for best música urbana album, marking a historic moment as she is the only female artist to be nominated in a category that has largely been male-dominated. The Grammy Awards are set for February 2, 2025.

When asked about the Grammy nomination, Young Miko expressed her surprise: “It was definitely unexpected. It’s always been a dream,” she shared at the Variety Music Hitmakers Brunch. She emphasized that this dream extends to her whole team, and the moment they received the news was filled with joy. “We just want to be able to enjoy it, and we’re just happy to even be considered,” she added.

Earlier this year, Karol G made headlines by becoming the first woman to win a Grammy for best música urbana album. Reflecting on her experiences in the male-dominated industry, she said, “As a woman, I have to say, in my experience, it was tough… to be a girl in this industry, in the music that I do, urban music.” She acknowledged the responsibility she holds in representing many women striving for their identity in music and beyond.

Young Miko believes a transformation is underway in the music industry. “I think everything happens for a reason, and evolution is a part of absolutely everything, so I’ll just leave that there,” she commented.

The 67th Grammy Awards will take place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with the ceremony airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
