LONDON — Renowned for playing a fictional naval aviator, Tom Cruise has recently achieved real-life recognition as a naval hero.

On Tuesday, the distinguished actor was presented with the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian award in acknowledgement of his “outstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps” through his involvement in films like “Top Gun.”

Cruise, who has been engaged in work within the United Kingdom, received the Distinguished Public Service Award from U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro during a ceremony held at Longcross Studios, situated near London.

The 62-year-old star expressed his pride in receiving such an “extraordinary acknowledgement,” which included both a medal and a certificate.

“I hold the utmost respect for all servicemen and women,” Cruise stated. “A fundamental truth I’ve held is that to lead is to serve, a belief deep-rooted within me. I see this same spirit in all our service members.”

According to the Navy, Cruise has played a significant role in enhancing public understanding and appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by military personnel.

The original “Top Gun,” released in 1986, catapulted Cruise to fame and notably contributed to a substantial increase in military enlistment, prompting the Navy to even establish recruitment booths in cinema lobbies.

The release of the 2022 sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” revitalized interest in the franchise, showcasing Cruise’s character as a mentor to a new cadre of elite pilots.

The Navy indicated that the sequel successfully stirred nostalgia among older viewers while simultaneously captivating younger audiences, effectively directing their attention towards the skills and opportunities that the Navy offers.

Furthermore, Cruise received praise for his performances in other significant films, including “Born on the Fourth of July,” “A Few Good Men,” and the “Mission: Impossible” series.

Fans can anticipate Cruise’s upcoming theatrical venture, titled “Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning,” which is scheduled for release in May 2025.
