Ademola Lookman and Barbra Banda crowned Players of the Year at African Football Awards

MARRAKECH, Morocco – During a ceremony held on Monday night, Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman and Zambian striker Barbra Banda were honored with the titles of African Player of the Year in their respective categories.

“Four years ago, my career felt like it was in a downward spiral, but now I stand here as the best player in Africa. Remember, don’t let past failures hold back your dreams,” expressed the 27-year-old Lookman, who was recognized at the Confederation of African Football event in Morocco.

Currently a player for Atalanta, Lookman clinched the award after showcasing stellar performances that led his club to a Europa League championship in May. Noteworthy is the fact that he scored all three goals in the final, marking a historic hat trick—the first in a men’s European club final since 1975.

Earlier in the year, at the Africa Cup of Nations, Lookman netted three goals, significantly contributing to Nigeria’s journey to a runner-up finish. He becomes the second Nigerian to win this prestigious award in the last two years, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, a fellow striker.

Barbra Banda also achieved notable success, having been named MVP of the National Women’s Soccer League championship after leading the Orlando Pride to their first title. Her impactful performances included a hat trick during the Olympic Games in Paris, marking her third appearance in the Olympics for Zambia.

Banda fought off strong competition from Asisat Oshoala, another Nigerian superstar who plays for Bay FC in California, and has previously won the women’s award six times since 2014.

Additionally, the men’s national team of the year accolade went to the African champions, Ivory Coast, while Nigeria secured the women’s national team award.
