KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent — Bangladesh commenced their three-match Twenty20 series against the West Indies with a narrow seven-run victory on Sunday.
Facing a daunting task at 61-7 in the 12th over, the West Indies appeared unlikely to challenge Bangladesh’s total of 147-6 from 20 overs. However, a powerful batting performance from captain Rovman Powell brought the home side closer, as they edged within 10 runs with just one over remaining.
In a dramatic final over, Bangladeshi bowler Hasan Mahmud (2-18) showcased exceptional skill by taking the crucial wicket of Powell, who scored a notable 60 runs off 35 balls. Just moments later, he wrapped up the innings by bowling Alzarri Joseph, concluding the West Indies’ total at 140 runs all out.
Mahedi Hasan had an impressive showing with the ball, taking 4 wickets for just 13 runs in his four overs, including dismissing four of the top five West Indian batsmen.
Bangladesh’s innings saw opener Soumya Sarkar shine with a brisk 43 runs from 32 balls, supported by valuable contributions from the lower middle order. Jaker Ali (27 off 27 balls), Shamim Hossain (27 off 13 balls), and Mahedi Hasan (26 not out off 24 balls) collectively propelled the team to a competitive total of 147-6.
West Indies bowlers Akeal Hosein (2-13) and Obed McCoy (2-30) both claimed two wickets each after the West Indies won the coin toss and chose to field first.
The second match of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by the third match on Friday, with all games being held in Kingstown, St. Vincent.
