MILWAUKEE — In an impressive performance, Brooks Barnhizer notched 20 points while securing 10 rebounds, leading Northwestern to a 71-60 victory over Georgia Tech at the MKE Tip-Off on Sunday.
Nick Martinelli and Jalen Leach also contributed significantly, each scoring 16 points. Martinelli initiated the scoring surge with a three-pointer, igniting an 11-0 run at the start of the game. Leach followed suit with a fast-break three-pointer, enabling the Wildcats to establish a 12-point advantage midway through the first half. Despite this, Georgia Tech responded with a series of shots, including a three-pointer from Naithan George and two more from Lance Terry, bringing the game back within a possession. However, Barnhizer’s scoring in the paint allowed Northwestern to maintain a slender 31-26 lead at the halftime break.
The Wildcats continued their momentum into the second half, outpacing Georgia Tech by scoring 16 of the first 20 points, which expanded their lead to 17 with just 13 minutes remaining. From that point on, Northwestern maintained a double-digit lead, showcasing their defensive and offensive prowess throughout the remainder of the game.
Lance Terry led the Yellow Jackets (4-6) with 17 points, while Jaeden Mustaf added 11 points and Ryan Mutombo contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, and blocked two shots. Unfortunately for Georgia Tech, this loss marked their third consecutive defeat, highlighting struggles that the team needs to address moving forward.
As for Northwestern (8-3), the team’s discipline was evident in their game management, committing only six turnovers, a stat that played a crucial role in their win.
