RICHMOND, Va. — In a commanding display, Madison Booker scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading the No. 6 Texas Longhorns to a 65-54 victory over Richmond on Sunday. This win marks Texas’ third consecutive victory while simultaneously forcing the Spiders into committing 24 turnovers throughout the match.

The Longhorns showcased their offensive prowess in the third quarter, making their last six shots to take a significant 53-36 lead. Notably, Booker contributed four baskets during this scoring run. Additionally, Texas dominated the third quarter with a 12-0 scoring edge off turnovers and outscored Richmond 10-2 in points scored within the paint.

Richmond’s Addie Budnik ignited a spark in the fourth quarter with a couple of 3-pointers, aiding her team in an 11-4 scoring run that cut the deficit to 57-47 with just six minutes left on the clock. However, Texas quickly reasserted their dominance, pushing the lead back up to 17 points with three minutes remaining in the game.

Booker matched her season-high, shooting an impressive 10 of 17 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Taylor Jones also made a notable contribution by scoring 10 points for the Longhorns, who now hold a 10-1 record. For the Spiders, Rachel Ullstrom scored 20 points while Budnik and Maggie Doogan added 12 and 10 points respectively. Despite a strong start with an eight-game winning streak, Richmond has now lost two out of their last three games, bringing their record to 9-2.

Texas’ defense made its mark early by restricting Richmond to 33% shooting in the first quarter and forcing seven turnovers. By the end of the first period, Texas had established a lead of 20-11. Although the Longhorns forced eight turnovers in the second quarter, their offensive output was limited to 13 points, allowing them to head into halftime with a 33-23 advantage.

The Longhorns have been consistent in their defensive approach, forcing an average of 24.8 turnovers per game over the first 10 games of the season, and Sunday’s performance upheld that trend with Richmond’s 24 turnovers leading to 26 points scored off those mistakes. Texas also showcased their strength in the paint with 36 points scored inside.

Looking ahead, Texas has three non-conference home games lined up for the remainder of the month, starting with La Salle on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Richmond is set to host No. 19 Tennessee on Friday, looking to bounce back from their recent struggles.
