GLASGOW, Scotland — Authorities reported that projectiles were hurled at police officers during tumultuous incidents that took place in Glasgow on Sunday, coinciding with the Scottish League Cup final featuring local rivals Celtic and Rangers.

Police also noted occurrences of shattered glass and announced that they would be implementing stop and search measures to avert disturbances and significant acts of violence.

Videos circulating on social media depicted flares being ignited in the city center of Glasgow, along with groups of masked individuals racing through the streets. In some footage, shoppers were seen seeking refuge in shop entrances as the chaos unfolded around them.

Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan addressed the situation in a statement, mentioning, “We have managed several incidents today in Glasgow city center where individuals engaged in disorder and violence throughout the area. The use of weapons or any form of violence will not be tolerated, and officers are prepared to intervene to maintain public safety.

“This behavior affects other members of the community as well as the vast majority of football fans who wish to enjoy the cup final without incident.”

Celtic and Rangers, both hailing from Glasgow, share one of the most intense rivalries in British football.

The two teams faced off in the Scottish League Cup final at Hampden Park, the national stadium of Scotland. The match concluded with Celtic emerging victorious after a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 5-4 following a 3-3 draw after extra time.
