World Cup Bobsled Competitions Recap

Kaysha Love is celebrating a successful conclusion to the latest round of World Cup bobsled competitions as the series takes a holiday break for Christmas. On the final day of racing in Sigulda, Latvia, Love, alongside Jasmine Jones, secured a bronze medal for the U.S. in the women’s bobsled event. This marks Love’s sixth medal in World Cup women’s bobsled, and she has now collected two of those since taking up the mantle of driver last season. In addition, she has a commendable collection of three medals from World Cup monobob events, including two golds and one silver.

The podium for the women’s bobsled event was dominated by Germany, with Laura Nolte and Leonie Kluwig claiming the gold and Kim Kalicki alongside Neele Schuten finishing with silver. In the two-man race, Germany’s Johannes Lochner and Jörn Wenzel came away with the victory. They were followed by Britain’s Brad Hall and Taylor Lawrence in second place, while Germany’s Francesco Friedrich and Alexander Schuller took third. Representing the U.S., Frank del Duca teamed up with Charlie Volker to secure a fifth-place finish in the same event.

In the luge competitions held in Oberhof, Germany, the Austrian team proved to be unbeatable, clinching the top four positions in the men’s singles race. Jonas Mueller triumphed with his victory, followed closely by fellow Austrians Nico Gleirscher, David Gleirscher, and Wolfgang Kindl. The top performer for the U.S. in that event was Jonny Gustafson, who finished in 12th place. Austria also succeeded in the team relay event, finishing first, while Germany and Italy completed the podium in second and third, respectively. The U.S. finished just behind in fifth place.

As for the bobsled standings, in the two-man category after three of eight events, Francesco Friedrich from Germany leads with 650 points, closely followed by fellow German competitor Johannes Lochner at 645 points. Britain’s Brad Hall is third with 594 points, while Frank del Duca stands as the highest-ranking American at ninth place with 432 points. In the four-man category, Friedrich again leads with 225 points, with Lochner and Austria’s Markus Treichl in second and third, respectively. For the two-woman standings, Love is currently in fifth place with 352 points, behind German sledders Nolte, Kalicki, and Buckwitz, who occupy the top spots.

Turning to the skeleton standings, British athlete Marcus Wyatt is in first for men, having amassed 1,037 points, and Matt Weston closely follows him with 1,030 points. The top American male skeleton slider is Austin Florian, currently in 11th place. In the women’s standings, Germany’s Hannah Neise is leading with 988 points, with American Mystique Ro in 15th place.

For luge, after the first three events, Austria’s Nico Gleirscher ranks first among the men’s singles, while Julia Taubitz from Germany is leading the women’s singles category. American lugers Jonny Gustafson and Emily Sweeney are positioned respectively at 10th and 5th in their categories. In doubles events, the American teams are also showing competitive standings.

Looking ahead, the World Cup circuit resumes in January with upcoming events in both bobsled and luge in Winterberg, Germany, and more skeleton races taking place concurrently. The athletes will be eager to continue their performances after a short break over the holiday season.
