Wolverhampton Wanderers parted ways with head coach Gary O’Neil on Sunday, as the club finds itself struggling in the Premier League relegation zone. With only three victories since March, the team’s performance has been a point of concern. O’Neil’s tenure, which lasted 16 months, ended following a disappointing 2-1 loss to Ipswich during the weekend.
This season has seen Wolves secure just two league wins, leaving them with a total of nine points from 16 matches. Currently sitting in 19th place in the league, they are four points shy of moving out of the relegation area. Under the ownership of the Chinese investment group, Fosun International, the club has been present in the Premier League since 2018. Following O’Neil’s departure, Wolves will be searching for their fourth full-time manager since the exit of Nuno Espirito Santo, the man credited with their promotion six years ago.
In a statement, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi expressed gratitude towards O’Neil, acknowledging his dedication, hard work, and effort during his time in charge. Shi also extended best wishes for O’Neil and his team’s future endeavors. O’Neil had previously mentioned his disappointment over a waning connection with the club’s supporters following the recent defeat against West Ham.
During his stints, O’Neil criticized the club’s ownership for allowing the departures of several key players, including Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves. He pointed out that while the club made a profit of 140 million pounds over the past three transfer windows, there has been insufficient reinvestment in acquiring quality players for the squad. The struggles began towards the end of last season, where Wolves managed only one victory in their final ten league matches, having previously been ousted from the FA Cup quarterfinals by the Championship side, Coventry.
Wolves now face the challenge of rebuilding their squad and regaining form as they look to climb out of the relegation zone in the coming matches.
