MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In an impressive display, Javon Small led the West Virginia Mountaineers to an 84-61 triumph over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday evening.
Small’s performance was highlighted by 27 points, where he converted 7 of his 15 field goal attempts, including two successful 3-pointers, and made all 11 of his free throws. This victory marked the Mountaineers’ fourth consecutive win, improving their home record to 6-0. In addition to his scoring, Small contributed six rebounds, six assists, and had two blocks during the game.
Aman Hansberry also made key contributions with 16 points and six rebounds, while Jonathan Powell added 14 points, successfully sinking four 3-pointers. Sencire Harris further bolstered the team with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
On the other side, Brayon Freeman led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 14 points despite shooting 6-for-18. Daniel Rouzan chipped in with 13 points, while both Trey Thomas and Reggie Ward Jr. tallied 12 points; Ward also grabbed seven rebounds. The Wildcats continue to struggle on the road, marking seven consecutive losses away from home this season.
The Mountaineers established their dominance early, with Small contributing 12 points and four assists to build a 41-30 halftime lead. With a shooting accuracy of 51.7% from the field, including 6 of 13 from beyond the arc, West Virginia also went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, solidifying their lead. They executed an impressive 11-0 run, which transformed a slight five-point advantage into a commanding 26-10 lead. Meanwhile, Rouzan led the Wildcats with nine points, but as a team, they struggled, managing only 33% shooting overall and just one successful 3-point shot before halftime, coupled with a 9-for-14 effort at the charity stripe.
The second half saw Thomas narrow the gap for Bethune-Cookman with a layup after his 3-pointer, bringing the score to 45-39 with 16 minutes left in the game. However, Jonathan Powell quickly answered back with a timely 3-pointer, igniting a 7-0 run that allowed the Mountaineers to maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the match.
West Virginia will now enjoy a break before returning to action against Mercyhurst on December 22.
