BUDAPEST, Hungary — Jordan Crooks from the Cayman Islands made history on Saturday by becoming the first swimmer to clock under 20 seconds in the men’s 50-meter freestyle during the world short course championships.

Earlier in the day, Crooks shattered his own record with a time of 20.08 seconds in the morning heats, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Caeleb Dressel by 0.08 seconds.

Later in the evening semifinals, he outdid himself by finishing with a remarkable time of 19.90 seconds. He will return to the pool on Sunday to defend his title in the final event.

In another highlight of the competition, Noe Ponti from Switzerland eclipsed another of Dressel’s records in the men’s 100 butterfly final, claiming victory with a time of 47.71 seconds.

Gretchen Walsh also had a noteworthy evening as she not only emerged victorious in the women’s 100 butterfly final but also excelled in her semifinal for the 50 freestyle, setting new world records in both events.

With one day remaining in the championships, the American swimmer has now broken a total of nine world records throughout the week.

Additionally, Summer McIntosh from Canada made waves by breaking the 2017 world record in the women’s 400 individual medley, finishing nearly 3.5 seconds faster with a time of 4:15.48.

This championship is being held in a 25-meter pool, which is half the length of an Olympic-sized pool.
